it started when i moved to boston and began playing with Daniel and Rusty--those games are all posted here. sadly, i think i've already played my best game ever, so it's all downhill. there are also some other fun things you can do with scrabble tiles. in the game comments, words on the board are referred to in all caps, phoneys are marked with * (words that aren't acceptable in tournament play), and blank tiles are indicated by lower case letters (e.g. "BLAnK"). when helpful to determine what tiles were lain by a player, parantheses are placed around lettters that were already on the board before that turn (e.g. "FI(LAMENT)").

a very sprawling game with lengthy words (and a lot of luck for me).
Darrell had two very nice extensions: S(LICE)+SINE and (WEEP)Y+OI(L)Y.
other good plays included EMOTION covering two double-word scores,
QUEER with 3xQ, 3xORDEAL+LAX, EH+HOME, and the bingo ARTSIER.
i was right that SIZY is a word, but wrong about the definition:
"viscid." |

fate delivered unbeatable letter combinations onto my rack very handily,
allowing bingos RODENTS and sTRICTe(R), plus the ever-potent EX-XI

i don't remember too much about who played what in this game... i do remember that we both had some high-scoring plays, but i had a lot of luck, like in the opening play, double-word score FrIEZE with the Z on the double-letter, and then getting those points again when playing the bingo VESTING. the Z got a lot more play too, extended to ZONE, REZONE, and REZONED. interestingly, FLEER is not "one that flees," it's a verb
meaning "to deride." also, ARYAN* is not acceptable

a bingo-less game, though not for lack of trying. my opponents were neck and neck with each other. i, on the other hand, lost 3 challenges trying to wring a bingo from my oh-so-carefully managed tiles. the worst was CRUDITE*-- CRUDITES is valid. lesson: rack-management doesn't work nearly as well in a 4-person game. by the time i finally had a good one (ENTOILS), there was no place to play it and the game was over. a startling revelation: ZEN* is not an acceptable play. ![]()

very devious--Andrew bingoed just after we ran out of tiles (MISTAkE). James and i both had full racks, so all those points went to Andrew and the game was suddenly over. jumped from last place to first. ![]()

a visit from the reknowned Mr. E., Daniel's dad and the guy responsible for whatever i still remember about integration (the fact that that amounts to anything at all is a great tribute to his brilliance). maybe if i write it here i'll remember that FET means "to fetch". ![]()

good luck for some (me), bad luck for others (everyone else). bingoed with WARRENS on the triple word. WIZ on double word. QAT on triple word. LAX on double word. played OM to make AM and COIF. i got almost all the power tiles, but Andrew did make a great play with EPICS on a triple word. ![]()

i bingoed with rEMINDED and was vindicated on the challenge of SOYS, but couldn't stop Daniel's consistent play and extra points for Andrew's Q when he went out (with ADORN?). our boards are opening up a bit, maybe? oh yeah, and QUIN is a word that Andrew will now never forget. ![]()

go James! his career high so far. it was pretty exciting when he extended WILD to WILDFIRE onto the triple word score. ZEK from the 3-letter-word study came in handy here. i do like CIVET, but my favorite word on the board is probably LINTY. ![]()

23 february, 2004 James's a non-competitive didactic game: referring to a list, play only three-letter words, preferably ones we didn't know. some of these are pretty useful.

this was a nice game. James keeps showing constant improvement, including a great bingo BEATING through a phoney OB*, and AVO. INDEBT* is a phoney also (INDEBTED is listed as an adjective, not a verb). i liked JEST, making SWAG, as well as the bingo GRIDDLES. ![]()

much to all our disappointment, FIES* is not a real scrabble word (nor is QUEEF*). not often one gets a chance to play AA, JO, JIN, and AZO all in one game. favorite word here (and a nice score for Justine) is LATEX. ![]()

my first game on Rusty's new "deluxe" scrabble board. handsome, isn't it? one bingo this game: TRIGGER (tj). neck and neck between Daniel and tj. if only i hadn't gotten greedy and tried to turn AXON into SAXON--lost the challenge. ![]()

11 october, 2003 BEST GAME EVER tj vs. Andrew
i have no explanation other than it was simply in the tiles, but below will probably be my career high for two-person scrabble. i was playing with Andrew on a lazy saturday afternoon, and everything just kept falling into place. key plays were the two bingos (laying down all 7 tiles for a 50-point bonus each time) INFUSER and FORBIDS, then HEWING on a triple word score, ZOO with the Z on a triple letter score, catching SEXY with the Y of VYING, and the play of EONS off the ends of LARVA and KNAVE. final score: 432, even after losing a challenge (apparently, VY* is not a word... um... who knew? luckily two turns later i had the -ING).
ps. MODU*? a good bluff on Andrew's part. EDU*? on mine.
